UMBERTO DE PRETTO IRU steers WHO and ILO on COVID action for road transport workers After meeting with the heads of the WHO and ILO, IRU and partners have convinced the UN bodies to work with the transport industry on uncoordinated COVID restrictions. This follows a joint advocacy campaign, and IRU members adopting a crisis call last month on global supply chain disruptions. The word is starting to get through: a few countries are now explicitly exempting road transport workers from the myriad of new Omicron rules. But most are not: our work continues. Fit for 55: an opportunity for the road transport industry? The IRU EU Conference brought together EU decision makers and mobility and logistics leaders from industry and NGOs to look at the European Commission’s Fit for 55 package. IRU also welcomed related EU mobility proposals this week, however warned on mode inequality and a lack of ambition with TEN-T plans for major EU corridors. And following COP26, the debate on the road ahead for our industry continues in all global regions, steering development of IRU’s Green Compact. IRU and UNECE sign new eTIR agreement on paperless transit IRU and the UN Economic Commission for Europe have signed a new MoU to achieve completely paperless cross-border transit by accelerating implementation of the eTIR system. On the ground, new corridors and digital TIR advances are opening new trade horizons from Islamabad to Istanbul, in Oman, and in Qatar ahead of the FIFA World Cup. RoadMasters focus on human investment in supply chains Managing safety and professionalism in times of driver shortages was high on the agenda at the third IRU RoadMasters Forum, held virtually this month. The event attracted the entire transport value chain, from shippers and logistics providers through to transport operators and international organisations.
