UMBERTO DE PRETTO Fight global youth unemployment by reducing the minimum age of professional drivers IRU is calling on governments to lower the minimum age for professional drivers to 18 in all sectors (truck, bus and coach). This simple measure will ease long-term driver shortages by guiding school leavers directly into professional training, helping combat youth unemployment. Data and road transport in the spotlight at the IRU EU Conference The IRU EU Conference examined the data economy for road transport, looked at how transport operators generate data and why a governance structure for business-to-business data is needed on a global scale. New studies show how to optimise trade flows with TIR IRU and the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) have published two studies on the potential of trade corridors linking Kyrgyzstan-Tajikistan-Afghanistan-Iran and Islamabad-Tehran-Istanbul. IRU welcomes new members “Road transport is the vital link in all global supply chains. IRU is pleased to welcome Huawei and Lytx to our network of members on all five continents. “We are excited to have become members of IRU this year. Lytx® technology helps protect and connects thousands of fleets and more than 1.3 million drivers worldwide. Our goal is to prevent injuries and fatalities before they become a reality, and Lytx Machine Vision + Artificial Intelligence can help achieve that. Additionally, when we place some of the power and insights from the data we collect into the hands of the drivers, we can increase co-operation, share the responsibility and have an approach to fleet management that is altogether more agile and responsive.” Coming up: IRU RoadMasters Forum Leading the talent race through turbulent times - 24 November 2020, 10:00 CET. IRU partner event: Sustainable Innovation Forum 2020 IRU has partnered with the Sustainable Innovation Forum to offer its members exclusive access to this virtual event, which will take place from 16 to 20 November 2020. With COP26 delayed due to the pandemic, the Forum will cover how we can accelerate investment in energy infrastructure to transition to a low-carbon economy and boost growth following the crisis.
